Steven D. Sonenreich’s 35-year career in healthcare began at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1976. Best known for his strategic thinking, long-term vision and steadfast leadership, Sonenreich ascended to the roles of executive vice president and chief operating officer.
In 1996, Steve left Mount Sinai for the opportunity to become chief executive officer of Cedars Medical Center in Miami. Under his direction, Cedars won several awards for customer service and overall performance. The Mount Sinai Medical Center Board of Trustees recruited Steve back to the hospital in his current position in late October 2001.
Under Sonenreich’s leadership, Mount Sinai has been designated one of America’s Top Hospitals for the last five consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, Sonenreich helped expand Mount Sinai’s operations over six South Florida locations to include the region’s only freestanding emergency department and multiple outpatient physician offices. He spearheaded the hospital’s affiliation with Columbia University Medical School, creating The Mount Sinai Columbia University Divisions of Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Urology. This unique affiliation is the only Ivy League collaboration of its kind in South Florida. As a result of Sonenreich’s commitment to manage expenses and increase operating revenue, Mount Sinai brought positive earnings the last three consecutive years while also steadily increasing its charitable and uncompensated care for the community. The hospital also saw its bond ratings upgraded by Fitch Ratings and Moody’s Investor Service. Sonenreich is the chairman of the Board of the Florida Hospital Association and serves on the Board of the Florida Hospital Safety Net Alliance, a consortium of the state’s teaching, public and safety net hospitals. He has been honored as 2012 Citizen of the Year by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and he received an award from The South Florida Business Journal as one of the ten Miami Ultimate CEOs in 2012.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and a Master of Business Administration and Certification in Healthcare Administration from the University of Miami. He enjoys all sports, particularly golf and bicycling.
